Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
A Pay-Pay is an eastern fan, normally made of rice paper, with a rigid handle and always open, like the one which can be seen in our logotype.
It constitutes a tribute to the Asian continent, the region of the world where paper was invented centuries before smoking paper as such arose in Alcoy.
As will be known to smoking paper collectors and lovers, the earliest booklets in Alcoy were designed in that way, with the back image inverted with respect to the front one. This symbology has been maintained by PAY-PAY since its inception in order to respect the tradition.
This drawing, known as filigree or watermark, is carried out using pressure and moisture to confer a very special delicacy and finesse upon the paper.
The PAY-PAY filigree, unaltered since its birth, has become a footprint of a centuries-long history.
Arabic gum has been used for smoking paper for centuries, as well as to make chewing gums, fruit gums, some drinks… It is obtained from the resin of acacia trees, from the little amber-coloured balls which form on their bark. These little balls are pulverised, then mixed with an exact amount of water at specific temperature conditions and, finally, they are applied on one the sides of the small paper leaf.
The arabic gum utilized in PAY-PAY booklets comes from Senegal and it is 100% certified ecological.
Type B paper, slim and with a low porosity, has a very slow combustion meant to prevent the cigarette from burning down if it is not being really smoked.
Being more porous, Type A paper allows the cigarette never to go out, thus making it ideal for moist tobacco in which combustion is difficult.
